This is an HDMI audio extractor, also called an audio de-embedder. It sits between an HDMI source and your display and does two jobs at once.
The HDMI input passes straight through to an HDMI output, so the picture reaches the TV, projector or LED screen exactly as before, at resolutions up to 4K at 30Hz as well as 1080p and lower.
At the very same moment, the unit pulls the audio out of that HDMI stream and sends it to two separate outputs: a SPDIF optical (Toslink) digital port and a pair of analog RCA L/R jacks.
That means the sound can go to a completely different device from the picture.
Because it is an active de-embedder, it runs on the included 5V power adapter rather than drawing power from the signal, which keeps the pass-through stable.
The RCA outputs carry 2-channel stereo, while the SPDIF optical port can carry a surround stream for an amplifier that has a decoder.
Signal flows in one direction only, source to sink, so it takes audio out of an HDMI feed rather than mixing audio back in.
It is the tool you rent when a display has no usable audio output of its own, or when you need to route event sound to a PA system while the visuals stay on the projector.
