An active converter that turns a digital HDMI source into an analog VGA signal, so an HDMI laptop, mini PC, media stick or console can drive an older VGA projector or monitor at up to Full HD 1080p.

HDMI is a digital signal and VGA is analog, so a passive lead cannot bridge them: an internal chip does the digital-to-analog conversion, which is why it works with HDMI sources that cannot output VGA on their own.
