The BOYA BY-M1 is a wired omnidirectional condenser lavalier microphone, which means a small clip-on lapel capsule that pins to a shirt, tie or collar and picks up the speaker's voice hands-free.
It connects through a 3.5mm TRRS plug on a long cable of roughly 6 metres, so it is a wired mic rather than a wireless one, and the speaker stays within the reach of that cable.
An inline module holds a single LR44 button-cell battery that powers the mic in camera mode, with a switch to select smartphone or camera use.
The capsule captures speech across a 65Hz to 18kHz range, which is wide enough for dialogue, narration and voice work without sounding thin or boxy.
Because the plug is 3.5mm, the BY-M1 works straight out of the pouch with DSLR cameras, camcorders, audio recorders and PCs, and with smartphones using a simple adapter where the phone has no headphone jack.
A 6.35mm (1/4 inch) adapter is included so it can also feed mixers, amplifiers and PA systems, and a foam windscreen and a metal lapel clip come with it.
It is important to note it is a 3.5mm-only connection, so to use it with XLR or USB gear you add the matching adapter, which we can supply on request.
This is a single-person lapel mic, so for two speakers you would rent a dual-lav or a second unit.
