It is the upgraded version of the popular BY-MM1, and the two things that set it apart are a gain control switch on the body and a 3.5mm headphone monitor jack.
The gain switch lets you set the microphone's output level to suit a quiet interview or a busier event, so the sound sits at a usable level instead of being too soft or clipping.
The headphone jack lets you plug in earphones and monitor the audio in real time, which is the difference between finding out on the day and finding out in the edit that a shoot had a problem.
It outputs over a 3.5mm jack and comes with two cables, a 3.5mm TRS cable for DSLR and mirrorless cameras, camcorders and recorders, and a 3.5mm TRRS cable for smartphones and tablets, so the same microphone works across most consumer devices.
It is fully wired and plug-and-play, drawing power from the host device with no battery or phantom power to manage.
The cardioid pickup is focused, so it captures best from the front and rejects a lot of the room around it when you aim it at your subject.
A built-in shock mount and the included foam and furry windscreens keep handling knocks and outdoor wind out of your recording.
