Question 1

What does this converter connect?

Accepted Answer

It connects a device with a Mini DisplayPort output (such as a MacBook, Mac mini, Surface or Thunderbolt 1/2 laptop) to a display with an HDMI input (such as a projector, TV or monitor). The Mini DisplayPort end plugs into your source and an HDMI cable runs from the converter to the screen.

Question 2

Is it one-directional?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It only works one way, from a Mini DisplayPort source to an HDMI display. It cannot be reversed to take an HDMI source into a Mini DisplayPort monitor. For HDMI into a Mini DisplayPort screen you need a different, active converter.

Question 3

Will it work with my MacBook or Surface?

Accepted Answer

If your laptop or docking station has a real Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt 1/2 port, yes. Newer laptops with USB-C or full-size DisplayPort need a different converter, so tell us your ports and we will rent the matching one.

Question 4

Does it carry sound as well as picture?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It carries video and digital audio together to the HDMI display, so a screen with built-in speakers will play sound without a separate audio lead, as long as your source allows audio pass-through.

Question 5

Does it need external power?

Accepted Answer

No. It is passive and draws what it needs from the Mini DisplayPort source, so there is nothing to plug into mains and no batteries. The source port must support Dual-Mode DisplayPort (DP++), which MacBook, Surface and most Mini DisplayPort laptops do.

Question 6

Does it do 4K?

Accepted Answer

It supports up to 4K at 30Hz, or Full HD 1080p at 60Hz. The actual resolution depends on what your source device and display can handle, so a 1080p source will still send 1080p. For 4K at 60Hz you need a different adapter and cable.

Question 7

Is 0.2 m long enough to reach my projector?

Accepted Answer

The converter itself is a short 0.2 m adapter. It sits at the laptop, and you add an HDMI cable from the converter to the projector or screen for the distance you need. We rent HDMI cables in several lengths.

Question 8

What ID and deposit do I need?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lankan customers need a National Identity Card and a small refundable deposit (this is a low-value item, so the deposit is minimal). Foreign customers need a passport.

Question 9

What is the minimum rental period?

Accepted Answer

1 day (24 hours). Daily, weekly and monthly rates apply, with discounts for longer rentals.

Question 10

Do you deliver across Sri Lanka?

Accepted Answer

Yes. It can be combined with other rentals and delivered together. Colombo and suburbs same-day, island-wide via courier.

Question 11

What happens if it is damaged?

Accepted Answer

Minor wear is expected and not charged. A broken converter or snapped connector caused by mishandling is charged from the deposit per our damage policy.

Question 12

What is the Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Converter?

Accepted Answer

The Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Converter is a passive Mini DisplayPort 1.2 male to HDMI female adapter (0.2 m) for hire from Rentitem.lk in Sri Lanka. It sends video and audio from a MacBook, Surface or Thunderbolt 1/2 laptop with a Mini DisplayPort output to an HDMI projector, TV or monitor at up to 4K 30Hz or 1080p 60Hz. It is one-directional (Mini DisplayPort source to HDMI display only), needs a DP++ host and no external power. It rents at Rs 300 per day with same-day Colombo delivery and a refundable deposit. Add an HDMI cable for any real distance, since the adapter itself is only 0.2 m.
