What does this converter connect?

It connects a device with a Mini DisplayPort output (such as a MacBook, Mac mini, Surface or Thunderbolt 1/2 laptop) to a display with an HDMI input (such as a projector, TV or monitor). The Mini DisplayPort end plugs into your source and an HDMI cable runs from the converter to the screen.

Is it one-directional?

Yes. It only works one way, from a Mini DisplayPort source to an HDMI display. It cannot be reversed to take an HDMI source into a Mini DisplayPort monitor. For HDMI into a Mini DisplayPort screen you need a different, active converter.

Will it work with my MacBook or Surface?

If your laptop or docking station has a real Mini DisplayPort or Thunderbolt 1/2 port, yes. Newer laptops with USB-C or full-size DisplayPort need a different converter, so tell us your ports and we will rent the matching one.

Does it carry sound as well as picture?

Yes. It carries video and digital audio together to the HDMI display, so a screen with built-in speakers will play sound without a separate audio lead, as long as your source allows audio pass-through.

Does it need external power?

No. It is passive and draws what it needs from the Mini DisplayPort source, so there is nothing to plug into mains and no batteries. The source port must support Dual-Mode DisplayPort (DP++), which MacBook, Surface and most Mini DisplayPort laptops do.

Does it do 4K?

It supports up to 4K at 30Hz, or Full HD 1080p at 60Hz. The actual resolution depends on what your source device and display can handle, so a 1080p source will still send 1080p. For 4K at 60Hz you need a different adapter and cable.

The converter itself is a short 0.2 m adapter. It sits at the laptop, and you add an HDMI cable from the converter to the projector or screen for the distance you need. We rent HDMI cables in several lengths.

Sri Lankan customers need a National Identity Card and a small refundable deposit (this is a low-value item, so the deposit is minimal). Foreign customers need a passport.

Minor wear is expected and not charged. A broken converter or snapped connector caused by mishandling is charged from the deposit per our damage policy.
