The Shure SM7B is a cardioid dynamic broadcast microphone, the go-to choice for podcasts, streaming, radio and studio vocals.
It captures a clean, warm, broadcast-style voice and rejects room noise, even in an untreated room. Rent it in Colombo, tested and ready.
The Shure SM7B is a professional cardioid dynamic microphone widely regarded as the industry standard for podcasting, streaming, radio and studio vocal work.
It uses a moving-coil dynamic capsule with a flat, wide-range 50 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response and a tight cardioid polar pattern that stays uniform with frequency, so it rejects off-axis sound and picks up your voice cleanly with minimal room colour.
Internal air-suspension shock isolation cuts stand and desk rumble, a built-in pop filter tames breath sounds, and two rear switches let you dial in a bass roll-off to control proximity boom and a mid-range presence boost for extra intelligibility on speech.
The SM7B outputs through a balanced 3-pin XLR connector and is fully passive, so it does not need phantom power.
Because it is a low-output dynamic mic, it needs a strong, clean preamp delivering roughly +60 dB of gain to reach a proper recording level.
Plan to pair it with an audio interface or mixer that has a good preamp, and on weaker interfaces add an inline gain booster, otherwise the sound will be thin or hissy.
You will also need an XLR cable and a boom arm or stand to position it close to your mouth. It is a studio and desk microphone, not a handheld stage mic, and delivers its signature sound when you speak close and on-axis.
Renting is the smart way to get this classic broadcast mic for a project, session or event without buying one outright.
