What is the difference between a normal HDMI extender and a KVM extender?

A normal HDMI extender only carries the picture and sound to the far display. A KVM extender also carries USB, so a keyboard and mouse plugged in at the display can operate the computer at the other end. KVM stands for keyboard, video and mouse.

What is the maximum distance it reaches?

Up to about 60 metres over a suitable Cat cable in a single uninterrupted run. Reaching the full distance at the highest resolution needs a good quality solid-core Cat6 or Cat6A cable, not a thin long patch lead.

What resolution does it support?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the exact unit. Higher models handle up to 4K at 60Hz, and entry models handle Full HD 1080p. The unit we supply may cap at 1080p or 4K, so tell us the resolution you need and we will confirm the model before delivery.

Is the Cat network cable included?

Usually not. The kit is the transmitter and receiver plus power. The Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A or Cat7 cable that links them is normally supplied separately because the length depends on your venue. Tell us the run length you need and we can arrange a suitable cable.

Does it need power?

Yes. At least one end needs a mains power adapter (5V DC). Many units use Power over Cable, so only one side plugs into mains and the other end draws power through the network cable. We supply the adapter with the kit.

Can I plug the Cat cable into my office LAN switch or router?

No. This is a direct point-to-point link. One transmitter pairs with one receiver over its own dedicated cable. It is not network traffic and must not be patched through a normal LAN switch or router.

Does it carry sound as well as picture?

Yes. The HDMI signal carries video and audio together, and many units also add a 3.5mm audio output at the receiver end for separate speakers.

Can I keep a local monitor at the computer as well?

On units with an HDMI loop-out on the transmitter, yes. You can mirror the source on a monitor at the computer end for the operator while the main picture goes down the cable to the far display.

On a good cable within the rated distance the delay is very low and fine for presentations, signage and desktop control. Very long runs, poor cable or high resolutions can add a small amount of latency, which is worth testing first for fast-paced work.
