Question 1

What does this HDMI KVM extender actually do?

Accepted Answer

It carries an HDMI video signal plus USB keyboard and mouse control from one place to another over a single Cat network cable, up to about 60 metres. You put the transmitter at your PC or media player and the receiver at the display, so you can run a computer that sits far from the screen and still control it from the screen end.

Question 2

What is the difference between a normal HDMI extender and a KVM extender?

Accepted Answer

A normal HDMI extender only carries the picture and sound to the far display. A KVM extender also carries USB, so a keyboard and mouse plugged in at the display can operate the computer at the other end. KVM stands for keyboard, video and mouse.

Question 3

What is the maximum distance it reaches?

Accepted Answer

Up to about 60 metres over a suitable Cat cable in a single uninterrupted run. Reaching the full distance at the highest resolution needs a good quality solid-core Cat6 or Cat6A cable, not a thin long patch lead.

Question 4

What resolution does it support?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the exact unit. Higher models handle up to 4K at 60Hz, and entry models handle Full HD 1080p. The unit we supply may cap at 1080p or 4K, so tell us the resolution you need and we will confirm the model before delivery.

Question 5

Is the Cat network cable included?

Accepted Answer

Usually not. The kit is the transmitter and receiver plus power. The Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A or Cat7 cable that links them is normally supplied separately because the length depends on your venue. Tell us the run length you need and we can arrange a suitable cable.

Question 6

Does it need power?

Accepted Answer

Yes. At least one end needs a mains power adapter (5V DC). Many units use Power over Cable, so only one side plugs into mains and the other end draws power through the network cable. We supply the adapter with the kit.

Question 7

Can I plug the Cat cable into my office LAN switch or router?

Accepted Answer

No. This is a direct point-to-point link. One transmitter pairs with one receiver over its own dedicated cable. It is not network traffic and must not be patched through a normal LAN switch or router.

Question 8

Does it carry sound as well as picture?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The HDMI signal carries video and audio together, and many units also add a 3.5mm audio output at the receiver end for separate speakers.

Question 9

Can I keep a local monitor at the computer as well?

Accepted Answer

On units with an HDMI loop-out on the transmitter, yes. You can mirror the source on a monitor at the computer end for the operator while the main picture goes down the cable to the far display.

Question 10

Is there any lag when I move the mouse or type?

Accepted Answer

On a good cable within the rated distance the delay is very low and fine for presentations, signage and desktop control. Very long runs, poor cable or high resolutions can add a small amount of latency, which is worth testing first for fast-paced work.

Question 11

What do I need at each end to use it?

Accepted Answer

An HDMI source (PC, laptop or media player) at the transmitter end and an HDMI display at the receiver end, plus the linking Cat cable and mains power. For keyboard and mouse control, plug your USB keyboard and mouse into the receiver.

Question 12

What ID and deposit do I need to rent it?

Accepted Answer

Sri Lankan customers need a National Identity Card and a refundable deposit. Foreign customers need a passport. The renter is liable for damage or loss, charged at actual repair or replacement cost.

Question 13

What is the HDMI KVM Extender (up to 60 Meter)?

Accepted Answer

The HDMI KVM Extender (up to 60 Meter) is a transmitter-and-receiver kit for hire from Rentitem.lk in Sri Lanka. It carries HDMI video, audio and USB keyboard and mouse control over a single Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A or Cat7 cable up to about 60 metres, so a PC or media player can be placed far from the display while a keyboard and mouse at the screen keep full control. The transmitter sits at the source, the receiver at the display, and one end is mains powered (5V DC adapter, PoC on the other side). Resolution ceiling depends on the exact unit, up to 4K at 60Hz on the higher models and 1080p on the entry models. A suitable Cat network cable is usually supplied separately. Same-day delivery is available in Colombo with next-day island-wide, and a refundable security deposit applies.
