A small active converter that turns a modern HDMI picture into the old RCA composite signal, so a media box, laptop or console can display on a television, monitor or projector that only has AV inputs.
A HDMI to RCA converter is a small active adapter that takes a modern digital HDMI picture and turns it into the old analog RCA composite signal that older televisions, monitors and projectors accept.
On the input side it has a single HDMI port that plugs into a media box, laptop, set-top box, DVD player or games console.
On the output side it gives you three RCA phono connectors: the yellow lead carries the composite video and the red and white leads carry left and right stereo audio.
A short USB power lead runs the electronics inside, so the box needs a live USB port or a phone charger to work.
It is a one-directional device, so the signal only flows from the HDMI input to the RCA output and never the other way.
This makes it the right tool when you have a current HDMI source but a display that only offers old AV or composite sockets.
The converter reads the incoming HDMI stream and rebuilds it as a standard-definition composite picture at 480i or 576i, which is what a CRT set or an analog projector was designed to show.
Picture and sound come across together, so one small box replaces a tangle of adapters.
It is handy for retro gaming, classroom and hall projectors, older CCTV monitors and any screen that predates HDMI, letting a new source reach an old display without swapping the whole setup.
