The BOYA BY-MM1 is a small cardioid electret condenser on-camera microphone.
It captures sound from the front and rejects most noise from the sides and rear, so a speaker or subject comes through clearly while the room and crowd behind stay quieter.
The frequency response runs from 35Hz to 18kHz with a sensitivity of -42dB, giving noticeably cleaner, more detailed audio than the tiny built-in microphone on a camera or phone.
The aluminium body is compact and light at around 86 grams, and it mounts on a camera cold shoe through its built-in shock mount, which isolates it from handling and mount vibration.
Connection is 3.5mm and wired. It ships with two cables: a 3.5mm TRS cable for cameras, camcorders and recorders, and a 3.5mm TRRS cable for smartphones and tablets, so the same mic works across both.
It is real plug and play and draws plug-in power from the device it connects to, so there is no battery to charge or replace.
