The RODE PodMic USB is a dynamic broadcast microphone from the Australian audio brand RODE, built around a neodymium capsule with a tight cardioid polar pattern.
It captures warm, full-bodied speech and rejects off-axis room noise, which is exactly what you want for spoken-word recording.
An internal pop filter and internal shockmount are built in to control plosives and desk vibration, and a swing mount is part of the body so it drops onto a stand or boom arm without extra brackets.
What sets it apart is dual connectivity: the same microphone has a USB-C digital output and a 3-pin XLR analogue output, so it fits both computer-based and mixer-based setups.
In USB-C mode you connect the microphone straight to a computer, laptop or phone with the included cable and record with no external audio interface.
The USB side runs RODE's high-gain Revolution Preamp and onboard APHEX digital signal processing, including a compressor, noise gate, high-pass filter, Aural Exciter and Big Bottom, plus a zero-latency 3.5mm headphone jack with a level control for monitoring as you record.
It works with Windows, macOS, iOS and Android.
In XLR mode the same mic becomes a straightforward analogue dynamic that feeds any mixer or audio interface, so you can build a multi-mic podcast desk or slot it into a broadcast rig.
